Hamilton Ontario is an old city, older than some major cities by far. Old cities have a lot of history to them and history tends to breeds ghosts. The ghosts and hauntings of Hamilton date back a long ways, when scores of residents died in the Cholera epidemic of 1832 and earlier. A plaque on the west side of Burlington Heights, north of the high level bridge, marks the spot of a Cholera hospital (formerly a barracks of 1812) where victims of the epidemic were buried in mass graves. People walking in this area have often reported inexplicable feelings of immense sadness and heartache. Some even speak of hearing the moans and cries of the sick and dying, carried on the wind blowing over the ground that covers their remains. Names of the more affluent can be found on tombstones erected in Hamilton Cemetary across from Dundurn castle. The dates of their birth and deaths record an era when shipfuls of diseased immigrants were ordered to remain offshore in the harbor, until all of the inflicted passengers were dead and disposed of properly.
